What are the disadvantages of unions on company culture?

Organizational culture impacts everyone in the organization, from the CEO to the frontline workers. Sofidel's greatest strength is found in its employees. When it comes to succeeding, we are all on the same side.

THE 4 CONS OF UNIONS

01. Unions can make it harder to promote deserving workers.

Unions tend to put a lot of influence on seniority, and that can make it hard for newly hired employees to advance. Unions also have their own internal leadership structures, and favoritism and cronyism can impede employee progress.

02. Unions require that employees pay dues and fees, reducing employees’ take home pay.

The Teamsters charge 2.5 times your hourly rate of pay for monthly dues. Local 413 also charges an initiation fee – money you pay just to continue coming to work at Sofidel! Ohio is not a “right-to-work” state, so that means it is lawful to require forced union membership in a union contract. Nearly all Teamster contracts we know of in Ohio have that requirement.

03. Unions do not bring true job security.

The tissue paper business is extremely competitive.  Circleville has been successful in the past because we all work together to meet customer needs as efficiently and effectively as possible.  This is the source of true job security for all of us in Circleville.  Unions typically bring division, an “us v. them” mentality, and potentially other inefficiencies, like inflexible work rules, all of which can stand in the way meeting those customer needs.

04. Unions limit your freedom, and look out for the interests of the union, not always those of the employees.

Voting in a union means you are voting in all of the union’s rules.  The Teamsters’ International Constitution is over 250 pages long.  It is chock full of rules that apply to every Teamster member.

All of these things limit your freedom.

One rule stands out when it comes to the Teamsters claiming to fight for you. Article XIV specifically states that the Teamsters “have final authority in presenting, processing, and adjusting any grievance, difficulty, or dispute arising under any collective bargaining agreement or out of their employment with such employer in such manner as the Local Union or its officers deem to be in the best interests of the Local Union.”

This means that the Teamsters control what happens to your grievance, and in deciding what happens, the Teamsters consider what they want, not what you want.
